Today I’m going to show you how I turned two plain Mickey chairs into a cozy sitting area! It’s not difficult but I do think there are some keys components that will make it work every time!
Let’s get started!
You may have guessed that I’m not out shopping for all new items when I do this. I’m using things we already have for most of this process but the same things would apply if I had the budget to start fresh, but that just wouldn’t be my style!
Start with a blank slate!
To show you how I did this, I stripped the area except for the chairs. You can see that we have really tall ceilings in this rental and that really helps with the light in this space.
These chairs where my sweet hubbies before our nuptials and at the time they had some rather dark cushions. As you might have guessed by the Mickey Ears they came from a Disney Hotel and because I worked at Disney for 6 years, I don’t think these are going anywhere soon! (Memories again!) But the cushions were dark and I wanted something lighter. Did you know that outdoor cushions fit these guys perfectly! Every spring I check for cushions lighter and brighter. It’s true I could sew my own and may consider that and a new finish once we are in a more permanent home. Until then I just try to think outside the box!
I added some drapery panels for color and to soften the space. These are from my stash and came from Ikea. This is not how I would have hung them if these were not a rental, but these rods are tension rods, so I don’t have to put any holes in the walls. My landlord will be happy about that!
I chose a floor lamp because a table lamp would have required a larger, taller table and that would crowd the space too much. I need to keep the chairs as close together as possible due to the limited space. It’s tall but not wide!!
This is the fun part! The rug has a large pattern that works great with all the solid elements in the room. Our sofa is an off white leather.
The throw pulls color from the rug, adds texture, and is really warm on these cold Texas nights!
Add some pattern and more color with a floral pillow. The tiny pillow adds lots of texture.
A few books top off the picket fence vase with some greenery to add height and texture. The finishing touch is this cute little ceramic box given to me by a dear friend and hides treats!
Whenever possible I like to add a little something unexpected and in this case this carved goose is my little surprise. He’s really big, but sits on the floor just fine! I think he adds another texture and the colors are perfect.
I know this was a little basic but I wanted to show you how I build my spaces. For me it’s about balance and cohesiveness. I just play around with different things until it feels right.
Do you have a space that you want to cozy up?
I’d love to see what projects you’re working on. For me, our home is always a work in progress and even if we were to win the lottery tomorrow, I would always keep the items that have special meaning to me. I bet you feel the same!
So if you enjoyed seeing my Mickey Chairs go from Boring to Bold I hope you’ll PinIt!
If you made it end of this long post, thank you and
Until next time!
